From Dan: Todd Akin and the Republican party
posted on August 23, 2012 by Dan

Republican Todd Akin's refusal to withdraw from the Missouri Senate race over his onerous comment about rape is hurting Republicans where it may hurt the worst: among independent and swing-vote women in probably decisive, up-for-grabs states such as Ohio and Virginia. This is the reason the Republican ticket is desperate to get him to quit. Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan being a long time close ally of Akin's on proposed new rape legislation, and women's rights in general is a special problem for the Romney-Ryan ticket. The headlines about Akin (and Ryan's ties to him) are just the kind of trouble Republicans were hoping to avoid in the days before their Convention opens in Tampa next week. My own assessment continues to be that Romney-Ryan still have a 50/50 chance -- maybe even slightly better -- to win in November. The economy is the main reason. But this Akin business is certainly damaging them some.
