As part of Dan Rather Reports, and later under the series heading Dan Rather Presents, Mr. Rather and his production team produced feature length documentaries ranging from a look at the Detroit Public Schools to America’s mental health crisis to the 70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor.
Mental Health is too often a taboo subject, and those who suffer from it are often subjected to policies that receive far too little scrutiny. In this film, Dan Rather and his team investigate a psychiatric hospital in Las Vegas that is accused of discharging hundreds of mental patients early and buying them a one-way bus ticket out of town in what’s called “Greyhound Therapy.” It is a stark portrait of what happens when some of society’s most vulnerable people are pushed further into the shadows.

On the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks, Dan Rather looks back with a series of powerful vignettes at the impact of those events - on individuals and the country at large. On 9/11 and the days that followed, tens of millions of viewers turned to Mr. Rather to help make sense of the unimaginable tragedy. Now, a decade later, the famed newsman reflects personally on those times and shares the stories of others who are doing the same.
Dan Rather Remembers 9/11
On the 70th Anniversary of “the day that will live in infamy”, many survivors of Pearl Harbor are gathering for what will likely be their final reunion. This film follows their stories and adds a collection of other chapters to its exploration of the moment that launched the United States into World War II. Woven throughout are Dan Rather’s personal stories and observations about war, loss, and the power of that place and time on our national psyche.

Detroit has become a symbol of American urban decay and its once-heralded school system a striking example of the blights that plague American education. This film chronicles a pivotal year-and-a-half, when politicians and educators promised to change the Detroit Public Schools, to root out the staggering corruption, institute sweeping changes, and rescue the life paths of its struggling students. These larger themes are personalized in the heartbreaking story of one family desperately trying to beat the odds and the impassioned reformer from out of town determined to remake the school district in his image. And yet, the film also explores the historical and social forces that brought the city and its schools to the point of crisis and may prove to be obstacles too intractable to overcome.
A National Disgrace
A one-of-a-kind American drama is playing out on the majestic landscape of the Great Plains. For centuries millions of buffalo roamed freely, then they were slaughtered to near extinction. Now, an alliance of conservationists and Native Americans have an ambitious dream to bring back the great herds. But cattle ranchers, fiercely protective of a way of life they see slipping away, are fighting back. It’s a clash of cultures and visions for the future of the American heartland.
Children are often the most vulnerable members of our society, and it turns out that those who are adopted from overseas are especially vulnerable. This film explores the shocking personal stories of children being abandoned or “re-homed” to other families when their original adoptive parents no longer want them. Much of this is taking place online and completely separate from any legal oversight or even regulation.

The New York City subways can be considered the biggest musical stage in the world. Artists of all types and talents ply their trade on the station platforms, looking to make ends meet and hopefully be discovered. This film traces several stories of hope, disappointment, and unlikely successes.
